ZONING PALAVER: APC in dilemma as N’East, N’Central reject Nat’l Chair

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is in a dilemma over zoning of its National Working Committee (NWC) offices, as the North East, North Central reject the position of the national chairmanship. Some media houses had reported divergent views that the national chairmanship position had been zoned to North Central, North East. Also in that report was that the national secretary was zoned to South South, South East.

But speaking to a top party member yesterday, it was revealed that the zoning positions have not been agreed on. According to the party member, if the zoning were concluded, the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee Secretary, Senator John AkpanUdoedehe, would be the one to release the information. The source stated that the information about zoning was not correct, as the North Central and North East governors have not agreed on where the national chairmanship should be zoned to. The same with the national secretary. According to the source, the position of the vice president is what the governors of the two zones are considering, while they reject the national chairmanship slot.

The party chieftain revealed that the governors of North Central and North East who are interested in the position of vice president are pushing the national chairmanship position away from their zones. For instance, in the North Central, the Governor of Kogi and Niger State, Sani Bello, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello, are interested in the slot of APC vice presidential ticket, should the presidential ticket go to the South. Also in the North East, the governors of Yobe and Borno states, Mai Mala Buni and Prof Babagana Zulum, respectively, are interested also in the vice presidential slot Another North East APC chieftain aspiring for the vice presidential slot is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha. All these are pushing away the national chairmanship position from their zone in anticipation to get the vice presidential ticket. Speaking on the zoning that was reported by some media houses yesterday, the source queried: “Did you see the national secretary’s signature on it? “People cannot be talking about zoning of the party offices without the Caretaker Committee.

I am asking you: Did you see official statement from the party? “If you want to report something, report that the North Central governors came out to say they don’t want national chairmanship to come to their zone; the same with North East. “The North East is trying to push those who are looking for the vice president out from the North Central with the zoning of the national chairmanship to the zone. There was a disagreement. They never agreed. Their meeting ended up in fiasco. I am giving you this authoritatively.” On the national convention, the source stated that it might hold with only the statutory delegates. “ln holding the convention, the party can call about 500 delegates.”
