Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba” at 10: Still an anthem of hope

On Thursday, music streaming platform, Spotify released a short documentary to celebrate Wizkid’s ‘Ojuelegba’ song 10th anniversary.

In 2014, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid released “Ojuelegba” a retrospective track that pays tribute to his neighbourhood “Ojuelegba” a small township in Lagos where he grew up and his rise to fame from humble beginnings to stardom.

Until date, Ojuelegba is considered a modern African classic, and an anthem of hope.

Up and coming music artistes who have been successful in their careers have listed Wizkid as one of their mentors, with a few pointing to the lyrics of ‘Ojuelegba” as one that inspired their courage not to give up.

‘Ojuelegba’ song is a reminder that Wizkid’s rise to stardom did not happen over night.

The superstar Nigerian singer and songwriter was born in the Ojuelegba suburb of Surulere, Lagos

Wizkid is a voice in the emerging Afrobeats movement.

His music is a blend of Afrobeats, afropop, R&B, reggae, dancehall and pop.

In 2009, Wizkid signed a record deal with Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E). He rose to the limelight after releasing “Holla at Your Boy”, the lead single from his debut studio album, Superstar in 2011.
