Wike Convenes Emergency Security Meeting, Says Unnamed Senator Sponsoring Protesters

Following the defiance stance of the anti-government protesters in Abuja, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, late yesterday evening convened an emergency security meeting with heads of security agencies and Area Council Chairmen.

The minister, who briefed newsmen after the closed door meeting, said that there is an intelligent report that a Senator was discovered to have established a link with the protesters.

Wike noted that the unnamed Senator was seen providing food for the protesters – evidence which showed that the lawmaker is one of the sponsors of the anti-government protest.

He also disclosed that security had been further beefed up, as there was credible intelligence that the protesters had perfected plans to reinforce for the purpose of vandalising public assets.

The minister vowed that the government would not allow anybody to break the law, nor disturb other people’s peace.

He stressed that the government never said that the protesters have no right to protest, but that such constitutional rights must be exercised within the ambit of the rule of law.

According to him, while the security agencies will carry out further investigation to unravel the intention of the lawmaker, the government would continue to handle the situation within the rule of law.

He said: “We have intelligence that the protesters are coming back with full force to destroy public properties. “We also have intelligence that a Senator is sponsoring the protesters by providing them food.”
