…says, We’re Not Hungry for Food, But Referendum
The youth wing of the Igbo sociocultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC), has dissociated itself from the proposed August 1 nationwide hardship protest, saying Ndigbo would be “spectators” rather than “participators.”
President General of OYC, Comrade Igboayaka O Igboayaka in a statement declared that the #EndBadGovernment in Nigeria protest scheduled for August 1st to 10th, 2024, “wouldn’t see the face of an Igbo man or woman on the street or road.”
“The ten (10) days protest under the banner of “Days Of Rage” wouldn’t hear the cry of anyone born of Igbo blood. Ndigbo have seen it all in Nigeria, we have seen Death, Blood and Starvation. What’s hungry for “Beans and Rice” “Cassava and Agbado”?
According to Igboayaka, “The real protest Ndigbo will Join is only a protest that will alter the section (2) of Nigeria 1999 Constitution as Amended, the “Indivisible and Indissoluble clause.”
The statement reads: “Ndigbo wouldn’t get involve in a protest of Hunger, because Ndigbo are not hungry for food, Ndigbo are only hungry for “Referendum, yes verily hungry for freedom and Political liberation.
“We can’t be eaten by leprosy and we’re busy romancing ringworm, so Ndigbo are Hungry for Political emancipation not hunger for “Beans and Rice”, or “Cassava and Agbado”. We’re hungry for Referendum.
“Apart from 1966 pogrom which broke the Carmel back there are other litanies of killings and massacres against the Igbos like, In Jos 1945 ( 2000 Igbos were killed), In Jos 1953 (150 Igbos were killed), In Kano genocide 1945 ( 200 Igbos were killed), In Kano 1954 genocide (30,000 Igbos were killed).
“Killings has been the only special delicacy served to the Igbos by this contraption called Nigeria from the time immemorial yet Nigerians haven’t convoked a Nationwide protest.
“All the above litanies of killings of Ndigbo couldn’t attract Nationwide protest, but because “Beans and Rice” or “Cassava and Agbado” price was increased and you want Ndigbo to line up to protest. Does this sounds logical and rational to you?”
He noted that Ndigbo were aware of the conspiracy of silence when Igbo suffered various levels of injustice including the invasion of the residence of the IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Afaraukwu Ibeku, Umuahia in 2017, in which innocent people were killed in the guise of operation python dance.
