We’ve good indigenous coaches – Erico

Former national team coach, Joe Erico, has said there are coaches in Nigeria good enough to handle the Super Eagles if given the opportunity.

Speaking on a radio programme in Lagos on Tuesday, the former goalkeeper said apart from those at home, there were so many of them doing well outside the country at the moment.
Erico cited the example of retired winger, John Utaka, who recently got a coaching job with Montpellier in the French Lique 1.

“I am not against anybody that is going to coach the national team, I am not the one who will also force a player on a coach,” he said.
“Remember, the bulks stops at his desk, if the team is not doing well, the coach will be the one to pay for it, the players will remain there, it’s like soldier go, soldier come with barracks remaining.
“We have players here, it depends on what the coach want because the most important thing for any coach is to get results, but the good thing is that, the current manager (Gernot Rohr) was not the first person to take us to the World Cup, all these indigenous coaches have done it one time or another. Some have won the world Cup at the lower level; we have to look at all those things.

“I am not saying a foreign coach should not come and work, but we have a lot of Nigerian coaches working outside; some in Europe, America, Asia and the rest, we have our own players coaching outside, we recently congratulated Utaka who got a coaching job in France, we have people who can do it.”
