Spokesman for the Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers in the House of Representatives Ikenga Ugochinyere has said the Rivers State local government election will be held on October 5 as scheduled.
In a statement yesterday, the group hailed the judgement of the Federal High Court Port Harcourt giving the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) the go-ahead to conduct the election, saying it “a victory for democracy”.
The group said: “This court judgement has saved democracy not just in Rivers State but the nation as a whole. “The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has been put to shame with this court judgement.
“We thank the judiciary for saving democracy and upholding the rule of law. “The local government election in Rivers State will be held as scheduled. “The electoral laws are very simple, there’s no court order that can stop an election.”
Ugochinyere added: “The Federal High Court, Rivers State Judicial Division, has declared that there’s no going back on Rivers local government election on October 5 as scheduled.
