The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the immediate removal of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, over the recent hike in the tuition fees of students of the institution.
Describing the students’ recent protest which led to the closure of the institution for three weeks as undesirable, the association in a release described the vice chancellor’s stand on the issue as tyrannical and anti-student, accusing his administration of implementing policies that had caused widespread hardship for students.
In a statement yesterday by NANS Senate President, Akinteye Afeez Babatunde, the student body specifically cited the recent hike in tuition fees, which it said had placed an unbearable financial burden on thousands of students, many of whom he said are already grappling with economic challenges facing Nigerians.
Babatunde added that; “Instead of addressing genuine concerns raised by the students’ union regarding exorbitant fees, the vice-chancellor took the cowardly route of sending students home for three weeks.”
