Trump Calls On Americans To ‘Stand United’ After Assassination Attempt

Former US President Donald Trump has posted a new statement after he was injured in an attempted assassination at a rally on Saturday.

“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united,” he said, adding that “we will fear not”. Trump said he was shot in the ear, describing a “bullet ripping through skin”.

The FBI has named the gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks – he was shot and killed by the Secret Service, reports the BBC. At a news conference, an FBI agent said it was “surprising” the attacker was able to open fire.

A witness told the BBC he saw a man with a rifle crawling on a roof before shots rang out, and that he tried to warn police.

The Oversight Committee in the US Congress has summoned the Secret Service director, saying “Americans demand answers”. One spectator was killed at the rally and two others were critically injured.

The man, who was shot dead during the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, dived on his family to protect them, his wife has said.

Reacting, Trump’s wife, Melania, called the gunman a “monster” and acknowledged that both her life and that of her son Barron “were on the brink of devastating change”.

Meanwhile, “suspicious devices” were found in his car, officials said, and bomb technicians attended.

Incidentally, more information about the alleged gunman, Thomas Crooks, has come out with state voter records indicating he was a registered Republican.

He did not have any military background. He was also a graduate of Bethel Park High School.
