President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged the creation of a national disaster relief fund to assist Nigerians affected by floods and other natural disasters.
He made this promise during a visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday.
Tinubu, who visited areas impacted by the overflow of the Alau Dam, emphasized the urgent need for the fund due to unpredictable climate conditions.
He urged private sector collaboration and proposed that a portion of federal allocations (FAAC) be dedicated to the fund.

In his response to the President’s Intervention, the Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured that the National Assembly would support the initiative.
Tinubu also visited the Shehu of Borno’s palace, an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Government Secondary School Maiduguri, and toured disaster-affected areas.
While offering his condolences to flood victims in Borno and Yobe states, Tinubu pledged federal support for rebuilding efforts.
He commended the swift intervention by federal agencies, particularly the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the military, for saving lives through evacuation efforts.
Tinubu also lauded Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Zulum for his proactive leadership in the wake of the disaster and recognized international organizations working in the state.
The Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba El-Kanemi, thanked the President for his visit and urged him to investigate the cause of the dam’s collapse to prevent future occurrences.
This relief fund is part of the President’s broader commitment to addressing the impact of climate change and strengthening disaster response across Nigeria.
