Three Internet Fraudsters Bagged Prison Sentence In Kaduna

The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna State has sentenced three individuals to varying prison terms for internet fraud.

The convicts Owoyale Shuaib (alias Mary Lisa Goklool), Oluwafemi Moses Oluwatosin (alias Douglas Chiater), and Wisdom Sambo Sammy (alias Prudent Jameson), were sentenced by Justices Hawaa Buhari and R.M Aikawa.

They were prosecuted by the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on separate charges of impersonation and cybercrime.

Shuaib was charged with impersonating a Facebook user, Mary Lisa Goklool, to defraud a Spanish citizen of $20.

Similarly, Sammy was also convicted for impersonating Prudent James on Facebook. All three defendants pleaded guilty to their charges.

While delivering the judgement, Justice Buhari sentenced Shuaib and Oluwatosin to four and two years imprisonment, respectively, with an option of N500,000 fines.

Also, Justice Aikawa sentenced Sammy to five years imprisonment or a N500,000 fine.

The convicts were also ordered to forfeit their mobile phones, used in carrying out the crimes, to the federal government.

The EFCC, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended the fraudsters at their hideout in Minna, Niger State.

They had been conducting their fraudulent activities online in the aforementioned location.

The convictions further indicates the EFCC’s commitment to combating cybercrime across Nigeria.
