Terson Shines As CBN Junior Tennis Ends In Lagos Weekend

Eleven-year-old tennis prodigy, John Terson, stole the spotlight at the CBN Junior Tennis Championship last Saturday, clinching titles in both the Boys 12 and Boys 14 categories.

The tournament, held at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, saw the rising star dominate his older and younger counterparts. He survived an earlier scare to beat the defending champion in the boys 12s Ikem Amasiani from Abuja to win 8-10, 11-9, 10.8, 10-5.

He also defeated Lagos-based Isa Yahaha in the Boys 14s 11-9, 2-10, 10-5, 10-8. The Boys 16s title was won by David Edwards whose onehanded backhand was at its ferocious best. against Dubem Amasiani.

Edwards dropped the first set against the 14 & Under champion who decided to try his skills in a higher age group before winning 2-10, 10-6, 10-7, 10-6.

Other winners were Gloria Samuel who beat teammate Aina Goodnews in five sets and Success Godwin from the Lagos Mainland club who defeated Mabubat Rasaki from Oyo State in the Girls 12s.

Another standout player was Mofi Atilola who trounced Bisola Ogunkolade from the Ekiti team 10-0, 10-5, 10-0 in the Girls 14s finals. She also defeated Ndidi Osaji in the Girls 16s semifinal before succumbing to Aina Goodnews from Ekiti in the final.
