Gunmen on Saturday shot dead four soldiers and set ablaze two operational vehicles in a border community in the Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Seven other soldiers reportedly wounded in the gunfight were expected to be referred to the Usmanu Danfodiyo Teaching Hospital Sokoto from the Gudu General Hospital yesterday.
Terrorists reportedly attacked and killed eight farmers and rustled over 1,260 livestock in the area recently. The Sole Administrator of the LGA, Umar MaiKano Balle, who confirmed the shooting, said the soldiers were killed after the hoodlums ambushed them.
He said: “Many of us, residents, escaped the ambush by a whisker, thanks to the quick response of security personnel.” Residents decried the incessant attacks in their community and asked security forces to check banditry in the area.
The latest attack on soldiers is an indication that insecurity is still a big issue across the land despite the government’s claim to the contrary.
On March 14, military personnel, comprising four officers, and 13 soldiers, were gruesomely murdered by some irate youths in the Okuama community during a peace mission.
The culprits have still not been brought to book. And in the eastern part of the country a number of security personnel including soldiers and police officers have been gunned down by assailants, who are still at large.
