Tenant Arraigned In Ibadan For Alleged Arson

On Thursday, the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State ordered that a 35-year-old man identified as Dickson Peter, be remanded in a correctional facility for reportedly setting fire to his landlord’s property.

New Telegraph reports that the defendant was charged with two felonies and one act of arson.

The Magistrate, Mr M. Mudashiru, who did not accept his plea due to a lack of jurisdiction, ordered that the defendant be held in the Abolongo Correctional Facility in Oyo Town.

Mudashiru stated that his remand is pending legal opinion from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

He adjourned the matter until July 23rd for consideration.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Femi Oluwadare, informed the court that on April 18, at about 12:30 a.m., Peter was accused of unlawfully setting fire to his landlord’s house, Cepas Okeme, and destroying belongings worth N6.5 million.

Oluwadare explained that; after he set fire to the building, it spread to the adjacent house belonging to Bose Ali ‘F’ and damaged items worth N3.5 million.

He claimed that the offence violated Section 443 of the Oyo State Criminal Code Laws of 2000.
