On Friday, a Chief Magistrate Court remanded former Special Assistant to ex-Governor Aminu Tambuwal, Shafi’u Umar-Tureta in Correctional Center for allegedly circulating falsehoods against Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, and his wife on social media.
New Telegraph reports that Umar-Tureta was charged with circulating injurious falsehood and engraving matter known to be defamatory.
The case which was first mentioned on August 26, 2024, by the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Abdurahman Mansur, was said to contravene the penal code law.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused committed the offences on July 18, 2024.
Umar-Tureta denied the allegations, and his lead Defense Counsel, Al’Mustafa Abubakar, made an oral application for his bail, which was objected to by the prosecution.
The Chief Magistrate, Fatima Hassan reserved her ruling, stating that the only document before her was the FIR, and the Defense Counsel needed to file a formal application for the accused person’s bail.
Hassan adjourned the case to September 18, 2024, for a hearing and ordered the accused to be remanded in Correctional Center custody.
