Amid the growing crisis in the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam has reiterated that he remains in the race to become the National Chairman of the party.
Suswam, one of the aspirants for the coveted seat, made the declaration on Thursday during an emergency stakeholders meeting held in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
Suswam emphasized that the North Central zone should replace the former National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, in accordance with the party’s constitution, noting that he has the full backing of the PDP members in Benue State to run for the exalted position.
“The party’s national leadership will select the new national chairman, and it will not be through any election,” Suswam explained, dismissing rumours of internal discord within the Benue PDP.

He accused certain individuals of attempting to manipulate the party for personal gain, stating that their interference contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2023 governorship election.
“Some people want to hoodwink us because they want to control the entire party structures in the state. Their actions led to the comprehensive defeat of the party in the last polls, and we must stand firm not to allow them to have their way again,” Suswam asserted.
He added that only the ward congresses conducted in 15 local government areas were legitimate, and anything outside of that would not stand.
Suswam’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts to stabilize the PDP’s leadership after the resignation of Ayu, with various stakeholders pushing for a smooth transition in leadership.
