Super Falcons Threaten To Boycott World Cup Opener Over Pay

The Super Falcons have threatened to boycott their opening 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup opening group game against Canada on July 21 over cancelled match bonus.

Senior players in the team took the decision to boycott the match on July 21 after the NFF announced they will not be paid match bonus at the World Cup because FIFA will pay each player a minimum of $30,000 appearance fee. A team source as reportedly said “We are going ahead to press for our demands.

“We are ready to go as far as missing our first game against Canada because this has to stop.” This latest revolt comes against the backdrop of a highly publicised bust-up between the NFF and the Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum. Waldrum accused the NFF of interfering in his team selection and not supporting the team.

The NFF was since countered, dismissing the American coach as incompetent. It would be recalled that FIFA was forced to intervene when the same team staged a sit-in strike soon after they were eliminated from the 2019 World Cup in France also over pay.
