Shettima To Lead Nigerian Delegation To CHOGM 2024 In Samoa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday direct Vice President Kashim Shettima to  represent Nigeria at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa.

The event, scheduled to take place from Monday, October 21 to 26, will gather leaders from 56 member nations, including King Charles III of England, under the theme, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.”

The discussions will center around how Commonwealth nations can leverage resilience, unlock potential, and harness digital solutions to drive collective prosperity.

Key issues such as the global economy, environmental concerns, security challenges, and empowering the 1.5 billion young people across Commonwealth nations will also be addressed.

One of the significant highlights of this year’s CHOGM is the election of the next Commonwealth Secretary-General, which will come from Africa.

Candidates from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia are vying for the role.

As the largest African member, Nigeria is expected to play a pivotal role in the election process.

During the summit, Shettima will also engage with global business leaders at the Commonwealth Business Forum, aiming to attract investment opportunities to Nigeria.

Additionally, he will participate in the Commonwealth People’s Forum, which provides a platform for leaders to engage with the public on development issues.

The Vice President’s presence at the event is expected to further Nigeria’s international standing while contributing to discussions aimed at fostering a more peaceful and sustainable global future.

This engagement continues Nigeria’s active role in the Commonwealth, building on the progress made at CHOGM 2022 and aligning with the nation’s objectives of promoting trade, innovation, and growth.
