SFH Appeals For Sustenance Of Family Planning Project

The Society for Family Health (SFH) has appealed to the Abia State Government to ensure the sustainability and integration of its Family Planning project in its health care system as it winds down operations in the State.

The five year project which was launched in 2019 but started in Abia in 2022, would be winding down this year, according to the State Behavioural Change Communication Officer, of the project, Dr Veronica Chiemela Eze.

Speaking at the in-reach programme for expectant and nursing mothers at the Abia State College of Health Science Technology, Aba, as part of the winding down programme, Dr. Eze, said it was necessary for the state government to support the project with its structure in the area of personnel and commodities.

“Abia State should adopt and integrate it to the system to empower and mobilise the women in counseling, training the mobilisers in moments of truth and empathy counseling for the clients,” she said. She warned that if the government failed to sustain the project the gains already made would be lost.

“If the government fails to sustain the project the mindset the people have of the project would relapse. The result is that women will begin to conceive and give birth without control because there is no family planning, and in no time miscreants will take over the streets.”

The Behavioral Change Communication Officer further explained that the Delivering Innovation in Self Care (DISC) project of the Society for Family Health with the aim to create awareness and demand for self-injection of the Sayana press recorded 80 percent compliance.

“The DISC project is about self-care for the women through planning their homes, so they control the birth and the spacing of their children,” she explained. In their contributions, the State Family Planning Coordinator, Iheama Adanna Kelechi and the Family Planning Supervisor Aba South LGA, Ifendu Ndiya, said the project was a huge success and appealed for government support with medical commodities and consumables so the gains already recorded would not be lost.
