The Senate on Wednesday, October 2, passed the first and second readings of a bill to establish the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.
The bill, sponsored by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC–Ekiti Central), aims to provide comprehensive management and administration for the proposed institution, with a focus on advancing agricultural education and tropical studies in Nigeria.
Leading the debate, Senator Bamidele emphasized the university’s potential to significantly contribute to the nation’s agricultural sector and support research in tropical studies, crucial for national development.
The bill was seconded by Senator Olarere Oyewunmi, who highlighted the institution’s importance in addressing educational and agricultural challenges.

The proposal gained broad support from key senators, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senator Solomon Adeola, reflecting the urgent need for such an institution.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio conducted a voice vote, with overwhelming approval from senators.
Following the vote, the bill was referred to the Senate Committees on Agriculture and Tertiary Education and TETFUND for further legislative review, with a report expected in two weeks.
The establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies is seen as a strategic move to enhance Nigeria’s food security and bolster its agricultural exports, aligning with the country’s broader development goals.
