Sections Of Lagos-Sokoto Highway To Cost N3trn –Umahi

The Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, has said that the Sokoto and Kebbi sections of the Lagos-Sokoto Superhighway will cost about N3 trillion.

Speaking during an inspection in Silame, Sokoto State, Umahi dismissed claims that the Tinubu administration had sidelined the Northwest, stressing that the project is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda to boost road connectivity and economic growth.

He said the superhighway, stretching from Illela in Sokoto to Badagry in Lagos, is designed as a concrete road with streetlights, CCTV, and emergency response stations.

The first 120km from the Sokoto axis is expected to be completed before the end of 2026.

According to him, Kebbi accounts for about N2 trillion, while Sokoto accounts for N1 trillion of the project cost, making the Northwest the biggest beneficiary of federal road projects under Tinubu.

Umahi described the project as the fulfillment of a 48-year-old dream of the late President Shehu Shagari, commending the Sokoto State Government, contractors, and security agencies for their support.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Works, Muhammad Bello Goronyo, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to infrastructural development in the country, despite the prevailing economic hardship.

Speaking at the project site inspection alongside Minister of Works Dave Umahi in Kebbi and Sokoto states, Goronyo highlighted the ongoing construction of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway will boost West African trade.

He noted that the superhighway, spanning across several states including Sokoto, Kebbi, and Niger, will significantly boost economic and business activities along the corridor, particularly within the Sokoto and Kebbi axis, before connecting to Badagry in Lagos State.

“This project is not just for Sokoto, Kebbi, or Niger states. It is for the entire country, as it cuts across different regions before reaching Badagry in Lagos,” Goronyo said.

He emphasized the project’s strategic importance, especially its connection to the Illela International Market, where construction begins.

“It will open up numerous business opportunities along this over 1,000-kilometer corridor, linking Nigeria to Niger, Mali, and other neighboring countries,” he added.

Describing the project as a “game-changer,” the minister urged host communities to appreciate the federal government’s efforts.

“I appeal to the benefiting communities to recognize what is being done and reward the President for his dedication to this region,” he said.

“We won’t need to return for campaign purposes once this project is completed, because Mr. President has already demonstrated his love and concern for his people.”

Goronyo also commended Minister Dave Umahi for his dedication to the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in infrastructure development.
