An Abeokuta Magistrates Court sitting in Ogun State has sentenced 38-year-old Saheed Adisa to one year in prison for stealing cooking pots.
The defendant, who lives at No. 25 Yemidire Street in Abeokuta’s Sabo area, pleaded not guilty to a single count of stealing.
Mrs V.B Williams, the Magistrate, however, said the prosecution counsel had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt and that the convict was guilty as charged.
She did, however, sentence Adisa to one year in prison on both the first and second counts, without the possibility of a fine.
She emphasized that the punishment should run concurrently.
Earlier, the prosecution, Insp. Lawrence Olu-Balogun informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 30 at around 4:30 p.m. at Japo Oke-Odo in the Adigbe area of Abeokuta.
Lawrence revealed that the inmate, a scavenger, broke into the compound of two people and took their pots.

He claimed that the defendant entered the premises of Mr Shakirudeen Durowoju and obtained entry through the window to where the pots were stored, adding that the convict stole the aluminium pots worth N35,000.
“The convict also entered into the house of one Mr Femi Adesoji and stole one cooking pot worth N10,000.
“He was caught by one of the complainants, Durowoju, who saw the convict around his compound and asked him what he was looking for, but he couldn’t give a satisfactory answer, which made him search the convict sack he was holding.
“On Opening the sack, the complainant Durowoju found his pots in the sack and other pots which he later confessed he stole from different houses, ”he said.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun 2006.
