Saraki Faults Kwara LG Elections, Says Its Lack Legitimacy

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has expressed dismay over the just concluded Local Government elections in Kwara State, describing the results as a “shame” due to the absence of legitimacy and the people’s mandate.

Saraki’s reaction followed the announcement by the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC), which declared candidates from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winners in all 16 local government areas and 193 councillorship seats across the state.

In a statement released on his X handle on Wednesday, Saraki criticized the process, alleging that the people of Kwara were frustrated by the absence of electoral officials and inadequate preparations on the part of KWSIEC.

He contended that the elections failed to reflect the will of the people.

“Whatever results the electoral body eventually declared, our people have sent a clear signal to a government that has not made any significant, positive impact on their lives after 64 months in office,” Saraki said.

He commended the people for standing firm, stating that their mobilization at the polling units was a bold expression of discontent with the current administration.

KWSIEC Chairman, Baba Okanla, had earlier announced that the APC had swept all positions in the elections, a result Saraki believes is a product of flawed electoral processes.

The former governor of Kwara urged the public to recognize the disconnection between those elected and the true will of the people, asserting that the officials would hold office without the people’s mandate.
