Brazilian forward, Roberto Firmino has found a new home in the Saudi Pro League, signing a three-year contract with Al-Ahli following his departure from Liverpool.
After the conclusion of his Liverpool contract at the end of the last season, Firmino, 31, became a free agent, allowing him to explore new opportunities.
With 111 goals to his name in 362 appearances for the Reds since joining Hoffenheim in 2015, Firmino’s impact and contributions were undeniable.
Al-Ahli, making several high-profile signings this summer, secured the services of Firmino, adding him to their roster alongside Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who recently left Chelsea.
The Saudi clubs have been active in the transfer market, with the likes of N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Karim Benzema, Ruben Neves, and Marcelo Brozovic making moves to the league.
Furthermore, former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has taken on the managerial role at Al-Ettifaq.
This influx of talent highlights the ambitions of the Saudi Pro League to establish itself among the top football leagues worldwide.
In June, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia, which owns Newcastle United, acquired four prominent clubs in the country, further fueling the league’s aspirations.
Firmino’s departure from Anfield, alongside Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner, marked the end of an era.
The quartet received a warm ovation from teammates and fans during their final appearance for Liverpool.
Among them, Firmino, a modern-day great, received the loudest applause.
Playing a pivotal role as part of Liverpool’s devastating attacking trio, alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, Firmino contributed significantly to the club’s success.
He played an instrumental role in Liverpool’s triumphs, including winning the UEFA Champions League in 2019, the Premier League title in 2020, and both the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022.
Notably, Firmino’s memorable goal in extra time secured Liverpool’s first-ever FIFA Club World Cup trophy in December 2019, defeating Flamengo.
