Atalanta’s standout player in their heroics Europa Cup victory, Ademola Lookman, has attributed his recent successes to playing for Nigeria. Lookman has had an impressive season with Atalanta, but his performance reached new heights on Wednesday night when La Dea faced Bayer Leverkusen at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
Bayer Leverkusen, unbeaten in 51 games this season, suffered their first defeat at the hands of Atalanta, largely due to Lookman’s exceptional play. The 26-year-old scored twice in the first half and completed his hat-trick in the second, becoming the first player to achieve such a feat in a Europa League final. His performance also secured Atalanta’s first European trophy in 60 years.
Lookman, who made his competitive debut for Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier against Ghana in 2022, revealed that the support from Nigerian fans since joining the Super Eagles has been a driving force behind his recent achievements.
He expressed that playing for Nigeria has been crucial to his personal and professional growth, inspiring his standout performances on the European stage. “It’s incredible, I said this earlier in a few interviews. The support and the love I get back home from our people is unbelievable,” Lookman said.
