Paris Mayor ‘Stunned’ By Snap French Election Weeks Before Olympics

French President, Emmanuel Macron, has called a snap parliamentary election, after the far-right National Rally won the European election in France.

Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo has said she’s “stunned” by the decision to call the vote so close to the Olympic Games.

The election will take place on June 30 and July 7 – the Games start in Paris on July 26, reports the BBC.

In the election, the National Rally won more than double the votes of Macron’s centrist alliance Elsewhere in the European elections, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said “the centre is holding”.

But far-right parties made gains in Italy, Austria and Germany.
