Paris 2024: Ogunkunle Secures Nigeria’s First Paralympic Singles Medal Since 2000

Nigeria’s Isau Ogunkunle has earned a historic Bronze medal in the Men’s Singles Class 4 event at the ongoing Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, marking the country’s first singles Paralympic medal since the Sydney 2000 Games.

Ogunkunle’s outstanding performances have brought Nigeria its fifth medal at Paris 2024, reigniting the nation’s legacy in Para Table Tennis.

Despite a valiant effort, Ogunkunle’s quest for Gold ended in the semifinals against Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Kim Young-Gun, where he lost 3-1.

However, his path to the semifinals was filled with outstanding moments.

In the Round of 16, the Ogun State athlete pulled off a sensational upset by defeating reigning Paralympic champion Abdullah Ozturk of Turkey with a 3-1 victory (6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10).

Ogunkunle followed this by overcoming Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Maxime Thomas of France in the quarterfinals, winning 3-1 (9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-6) to secure his place in the final four and guarantee Nigeria a historic medal.
