Paris 2024: Falcons seek redemption as Waldrum’s ladies ambush Spain

The Super Falcons will hope to reignite their chances of moving to the next round of the women’s football event of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games when they take on Spain in Nantes on Sunday evening.

The game, which will air live on Sporty TV channel on StarTimes by 8pm will be a tricky match for the Falcons as it will make or mar their chances.

Nigeria lost their first game of the competition against Brazil during the week and another defeat in the hands of the world champion will likely be the end of the road for the Falcons in France.
It was 26 years ago that the Super Eagles defeated Spain 3-2 during the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the Falcons will draw an inspiration from that famous victory.

The world champions edged feisty Japan 2-1 to top Group C with three points, while the nine-time African champions were pipped by the odd goal by Brazil, and need the maximum points on Sunday to renew their hopes of a place in the last eight.

With no injuries in camp, Coach Randy Waldrum may stick to the team that started against Brazil on Thursday, though Michelle Alozie may start from the left back to allow Nicole Payne, who showed great spirit when she came into the game against the South Americans, to operate from the right side of defence.

Speaking ahead of the important encounter, the captain of the team, Rasheedat Ajibade, said they will have to take their chances against their opponents to stand a chance of victory.

“We missed quite a few chances against Brazil, and they took their chance. We will do our best to take our chances against Spain on Sunday,” she said.
