Oyo LG Poll, Peaceful At Par With INEC, Makinde As Rep Member Commends OYSIEC

…Low turn-out, late arrival of electoral materials in many APC-controlled areas

At Ward 11, Unit 1, Abayomi area, Ibadan North East Local Government where governor Seyi Makinde voted at 10.23 a.m, the election went peacefully as the electorate were seen casting their votes at 9.00 a.m.

Speaking at the venue, Makinde said “In Oyo Stae, democracy is almost like a giving that democracy at the grassroots is what we practised.

“This is almost about 5 years we have been in the office, and we are holding the second local government election. Before we came in, it had always been Caretaker at the grassroots level without the people having a say in how they were being governed. As you can see, people are going about that exercise peacefully.

“I commend our people for coming out to take democracy seriously at that level. If you compare this election with the one conducted by INEC, you will see that they are at par.

“My message therefore to the people is for them to accept the result of the election. And if you see anything untoward as far as this exercise is concerned, please bring it up to the authorities and they will deal with it”, the governor said.

Meanwhile, election materials arrived late at many of the polling units, especially at Mokola, Aremo, Sango, Gate, Olorunsogo, and Oke Aremo in the Ibadan North Local government area. As of 11 a.m., electoral officials and polling materials had not arrived at Ibadan North, Ward 3, the home of Senator Sarafadeen Alli of the Oyo South Senatorial district.

The Senator complained to journalists that it was bad that as of 10.55 a.m., no electoral officers and ballot materials had been brought to his ward. The willing voters could not cast their votes.

Alli said there were complaints from many areas in Ibadan, as well as, the Iseyin, and Ibarapa zones that the electorate did not have voting materials to exercise their franchise. He even said that a ward chairman in the Eruwa, Ibarapa area of the state was on Thursday attacked.

“As I tell you, the party chairman of APC is lying critically ill in a hospital at Eruwa. Nobody has seen anybody. Is everyone going to call the OYSIEC chairman? What about those who don’t have his number? There must be another avenue and it’s not just about complaints, it’s about doing the right thing. In the previous elections, it wasn’t like this.

“I have heard complaints from Iseyin, Eruwa and Okeho. There was a problem in Ayete yesterday. Polling officers are yet to arrive at Idi Ikan Onibata in wards 4&5, Ibadan North West. People kept complaining everywhere. Electoral Officers said they were just coming on the way.

“It shows that OYSIEC is ill-prepared or they are up to some game. It’s one of the two because, by 11 a.m., election materials are yet to arrive at this place which is just a few meters away from the headquarters of Ibadan North Local Government”.

At Ward 9, Unit 5, Ibadan South West, Hon. Stanley Olajide Odidiomo voted at 11.30. He urged voters to come out and vote, saying that it was not late yet. People eventually started trooping out and filing up to vote.

Speaking with journalists, Odidiomo said, “I have gone around and it’s now that people are coming out. There’s a slow start in the morning. I think as they proceed at the 10:00-10:30 threshold, people should be coming out.

“This is the time our people should take local government elections seriously. If Nigeria is going to get any better, local government election should taken seriously. Things are going well and we are going to canvass that people should come out”, he said.
