Omicron: Insincerity, racketeering fueling outbreak –GMD President

…says variant unpredictable

The President, Guild of Medical Directors (GMD), Prof. Femi Babalola, has said the outbreak of the Omicron was fuelled by in sincerity on the part of those administering the COVID-19 tests, and the certification of the COV1D-19 vaccine status.

Also, Prof Babalola, who described the outbreak of Omicron as unfortunate, said based on the scam around the administration of COVID-19 tests and the certification of vaccination status, some South Africa based Nigerians could land in the United Kingdom (UK) armed with vaccine certificates when they had not even been vaccinated.

He said: “There is a racket in vaccine certificates now, just as there was with yellow fever vaccine yellow card.” “The outbreak of Omicron is unfortunate. It was fuelled largely by insincerity on the part of those administering the COVID – 19 tests, and the certification of the COVID – 19 vaccine  status.

This is why some South Africa Based Nigerians could land in the UK armed with vaccine certificates when they had not even been vaccinated? There is a racket in vaccine certificates now, just as there was with yellow fever vaccine yellow card. He said, “Containment of the spread can be carried out basically with the intensification of control measures such as vaccinations, social distancing and crowd control, hygiene, and the smart use of chemoprophylactic measures such as Ivermectin.” Furthermore, Prof. Babalola said that it is not necessary to lock down now.

Nor does it make sense to restrict travel. He continued: “We must encourage vaccination using our mega church general overseers and Imams, as well as traditional rulers and opinion leaders who should lead by example. Government has been rather laid back in the issue of securing the buying in of the populace on vaccination.”

On the expired one million vaccines, the president of GMD said it is not the fault of Nigeria that the vaccines expired. “The poor uptake is partially responsible, but at the same time donors cynically tend to give out nearly expired drugs in the first place.

Government has asked for donors to change this habit. Also contributing to how severe Omicron is, a renouwned virologist and specialist in human, zoonotic and veterinary viruses, Prof. Oyewale Tomori said, “We can’t say; none of us can say. It just came around about a month ago.

We can talk about Delta Variant because that one had been around for some time, but none of us can predict what will happen with Omicron.”
