Olympic Games facts

The Olympic anthem was approved by the IOC at its 55th Congress held in 1958 in Tokyo.

Only cities bid for the hosting of the Olympic Games and the candidature of the city must be approved by the country’s NOC which in turn presents it to the IOC. Two cities in a country could bid for the Games, it rests on the NOC to decide which one will be proposed for election.

Only sports widely practised by men in at least 75 countries and in four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and in three continents may be included in the Games of the Olympiad.
All sports must take place in the host city of Olympic Games unless the host obtains rights from the IOC to stage certain events in other cities in the country.

The election of the host city for Olympic Games is the prerogative of the IOC alone.

The duration of the competition of the Games of the Olympiad and of the Winter Games shall not exceed 16 days. If no competition is scheduled for Sundays or public holidays, the duration may be extended with the approval of the IOC Executive Board.

The organisation for the Olympic Games is entrusted by the IOC to the NOC of the host country. The NOC shall form for that purpose an Organising Committee (OCOG) which from the time it is constituted deals directly with the IOC.

The NOC, the OCOG and the host city are jointly and severally liable for all commitments entered into individually or collectively concerning the staging of the Olympic Games.
In the event of violation of rules or breach of the commitments entered into, the IOC has the right to withdraw at any time and with immediate effect, the hosting rights from the host city, the OCOG and NOC without compensation.
