It was another heartache for Team Nigeria in Paris, France as one of the country’s medal hopeful, Ese Brume, faltered in the final of the women’s long jump as she placed fifth to end the competition without a medal as against the bronze she won in Tokyo 2020 Games.

With the country still searching for its first medal, all hope will now be on World Record holder in women’s 100m hurdles, Oluwatobiloba Amusan, as she takes to the tracks in the semifinal of her race today.

After making it to the semifinal, Amusan will be hoping to get the elusive first medal for Nigeria and her own maiden Olympic medal after finishing fourth at the last Games in Tokyo.

Brume jumped the distance of 6.70m to finish fifth in an event won by US’s Tara Davis-Woodhall with Malaika Mihambo from Germany winning the silver with a leap of 6.98m. Jasmine Moore from the US scooped the bronze medal after jumping a distance of 6.96m.

The other two Nigerians in the event, Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor finished in 10th and 12th
position with jumps of 6.58m and 6.24m respectively.

Also on today, Nigeria’s athletes would be competing in the heat of the men’s 4x400m relay while two others would be taking to the mat in the wrestling event as Esther Kolawole battles Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova in the women’s freestyle 62kg while Ashton Mutuwa takes on Daniel Ligeti from Hungary in the men’s freestyle 125kg.

Taekwondo event will see Elizabeth Anyanacho also competing in the women’s 67 kg round of 16 against Song Jie of China.
