Olubadan’s Coronation: Olakulehin Healthy, Fit For Installation, Ladoja

Faults Makinde’s judgment and dela

The Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja has faulted governor Seyi Makinde over his assertion that the Olubadan designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, would be installed when he is medically fit for the processes, saying that “much as I know, Baba is healthy”.

Governor Makinde had at the final burial of late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, said that the Olubadan-in-Council had sent him their recommendation of Olakulehin and he had confirmed that all the due processes had been followed and approved, but that the 43rd Olubadan would be installed when his health is sound enough to withstand the rigours of coronation processes.

The Ibadan people had however expected the governor to announce the coronation date on that occasion.

Reacting while speaking with journalists on Sunday in his Ondo Road, Bodija, Ibadan, Ladoja said: Baba Olakulehin is an aged man going to 89 years. We don’t expect him to still be acting like a youth.

“No one should expect him to be running about at his age to determine his health status. This is the man that became Mogaji in 1983. So, what do you expect of his health?

“He came out during the week and inspected the new Olubadan Palace. He walked around and even climbed the stairs.

“However, maybe the governor has access to medical records of Olakulehin’s health, or he had sent his doctors to access his health or use Artificial Intelligence to do that.

“I don’t have any problem if the governor refuses to give him staff of office or instrument of office, but he is not the one to enthrone him.”

To underscore his point further in case the insinuation is true that Makinde does not want to crown Olakulehin, the former Oyo State governor said Makinde does not have the power to crown the new Olubadan of Ibadan land.

It is the people of lbadan land who will crown the new Olubadan, and the governor’s role is only to present the staff and instrument of office to the new monarch.

Thank God I am the head of the kingmakers, and the governor said we followed due process in the selection of Olakulehin.

“It is the Oluwo of lbadan land who crowns a new Olubadan, and not the governor. The Olubadan will be crowned at lle Ose-Meji, from where he will go to Mapo for the governor to present him the staff and instrument of office.

Once the Akoko leaves are placed on the Oba’s head, he has become the Olubadan”, he said.

On whether the governor was targeting him so he won’t become Olubadan when it is his turn, Ladoja said he is not Makinde’s target.

The governor is not delaying coronation of Baba Olakulehin because of me. He sent a big cow and many bags of rice to me for the Sallah. He had called to greet me for the Sallah. So, we still have cordial relationship”, he said.
