Ogun, Oyo Assemblies Seek Resolution To Boundary Dispute

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Daisi Elemide, has expressed confidence that the boundary dispute between Ogun and Oyo states will be resolved amicably, describing it as a “family affair.”

Elemide made this remark on Wednesday while hosting a delegation from the Oyo State House of Assembly led by the Deputy Speaker, Mohammed Fadeyi representing Ona-Ara State Constituency, at Oke-Mosan in Abeokuta.

The meeting, co-chaired by the Deputy Speakers of both Ogun and Oyo states, Lateefat Ajayi and Fadeyi respectively, was convened to discuss the long-standing boundary issues affecting communities on both sides.

Elemide emphasized the importance of unity, peaceful coexistence, and development within the Southwest, stressing the need for the involvement of the National Boundary Commission (NBC) in future deliberations.

During the meeting, Elemide called for a joint physical verification of the disputed boundary areas by officials from both states and the NBC to address concerns raised by the affected communities.

He urged residents of the border areas to remain calm and assured them that Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde would be kept informed about the progress made.

Fadeyi noted the urgency of resolving the boundary conflicts, which have affected communities along Ibarapa East, Ibarapa Central, Elere, Ayegbede, Opeji, Ilugun, Atakan, Aya villages, as well as Iddo, Bakatari, Obete, and Apojola.

He explained that the issue was raised as a matter of urgent public importance in the Oyo State House of Assembly, prompting the need for collaboration with their Ogun counterparts to find a legislative solution to the problem.

Samsideen Lawal, the representative for Water Side State Constituency, along with James Mafe, Director of Legislative Drafting at the Ogun Ministry of Justice, and Oladele Ewulo, the Ogun State Surveyor General, noted the efforts made in previous years to resolve the boundary dispute.

They however expressed optimism that the issue would be resolved with the involvement of the National Boundary Commission.
