The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to grassroots sports development, emphasising that Lagos will continue to invest in programmes and initiatives aimed at producing worldclass athletes.
Speaking to journalists ahead of the 8th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State, Fatodu highlighted the state’s efforts in preparing for the event, where Lagos will be represented by 270 athletes competing in 34 sports.
The Games are scheduled to take place from September 9th to 19. Fatodu explained that the state is focused on nurturing young talents through comprehensive training, mentorship, and incentives, aimed at instilling pride in representing Lagos while showcasing their athletic prowess.
He commended the Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for ensuring that payment, welfare, and plans for athletes are provided at the right time. He added that the state is developing sports infrastructure across various communities to ensure stadium access.
Addressing the issue of athletes’ age discrepancies, Lekan Fatodu stated that the state has been transparent and effective in ensuring that the athletes presented meet the required age criteria by the rules and regulations governing the NYG.
“It’s unfair on our part to present the right number of athletes according to their age while others attempt to cheat by presenting over-aged athletes.”
