Nwosu To NFF: Stop search for foreign coach, stick with Eguavoen

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Henry Nwosu, has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to reconsider its search for a foreign coach and instead retain Augustine Eguavoen as the head coach of the national team.

In an interview, Nwosu argued that Eguavoen, who is currently serving as the Technical Director of the NFF, has the necessary experience and skills to lead the Super Eagles to success. He expressed his belief that foreign coaches are often overrated and do not possess any unique coaching philosophies that cannot be replicated by domestic coaches.

“We have quality coaches in Nigeria who can do the job,” Nwosu stated. “Why waste money on foreign coaches? Eguavoen has started well, and he should be given the chance to continue. Let’s support our home-based coaches and allow them to prove themselves”, ” We cannot be dependent on expatriates or people from outside.

No, Allow our home-based boys to do it. Some of them are outside, They can still do it.”

While acknowledging that the dual roles of Technical Director and head coach might be demanding, Nwosu suggested that the NFF could alleviate Eguavoen’s workload by appointing a new Technical Director. He emphasized that Eguavoen’s primary focus should be on leading the Super Eagles to glory.

“If the NFF feels that the dual roles are too much for Eguavoen, they can appoint a new Technical Director,” Nwosu added. “But Eguavoen should remain as the head coach. He can take the team to the next level.”

Nwosu’s endorsement of Eguavoen comes at a time when the NFF is reportedly considering various options to replace Gernot Rohr, whose contract was terminated earlier this year. The former Super Eagles midfielder plea for the retention of a domestic coach could spark a debate on the merits of foreign versus local coaches in Nigerian football.
