Nigeria’s revenue threatened as militant group vows to crumble oil production

Nigeria’s oil revenue has been threatened as a result of the threat by a group of Niger Delta militants called ‘Creek Reform Warriors.’ The group, in a state- ment made available to journalists yesterday, threatened to disrupt oil production in Nigeria by attacking important oil platforms and other infra- structure in the Niger Delta region. It specifically vowed that it could attack all significant facilities operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) in response to the alleged unfair sack of many of its employees at the Forcados facility. Leader of the Creek Reform Warriors, Igbokuro Tinowei, in the statement, warned that the group was dangerous and had the ability to disrupt Shell’s oil pro- duction activities. He urged SPDC to recall all the sacked employees at the Forcados Terminal.

He demanded the unconditional reinstatement of all workers from Ogulagha and Odimodi communities, who he said were sacked unjustly by SPDC in 2019. He further advised the oil company to provide new opportunities for all qualified natives of the oil-producing communities to work and live in their communities. He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to persuade the SPDC management to recall the disengaged workers, adding that their threatened attacks on Shell installations, if carried out, would be detrimental to the Federal Government’s oil production quota and Nigeria’s battered economy.

Tinowei noted: “SPDC had promised to recall the sacked workers immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic, but serially defaulted. We are warning the management of SPDC to reinstate the said workers within two weeks or face dire consequences of a sustained brutal attack. “If these workers from Ogulagha and Odimodi communities are not recalled, all SPDC operations in the Niger Delta including their pipelines will be shut down; this is going to be a do or die engagement. “We are not joking. We are a deadly and dangerous group in the Niger Delta region. We have a team of specialists in different fields.

Our struggle is for the liberation of our people from unemployment in the hands of SPDC and other international oil companies (IOCs) operating in the region. “We can boldly tell the world that all preparations and plans are on the ground to bring down Nigerian crude oil production to zero per cent and this will continue until the IOCs employ our people; there will be no going back.”
