Nigerian Army Denies Alleged Attack On Soldiers In Imo

The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has dismissed reports of an alleged attack on troops stationed at the Ehime Mbano Local Government Secretariat in Imo State.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant-Colonel JE Unuakhalu said the reports are false and baseless fabrications.

He alleged the misinformation is being peddled by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) sympathizers.

The incident occurred on the night of October 8, 2024, when IPOB/ESN criminal elements attempted to breach the Ehime Mbano Local Government Secretariat.

However, the Nigerian Army swiftly responded and thwarted the attackers’ efforts, forcing them to retreat.

A follow-up operation in the early hours of October 9 revealed that the dissidents had sustained heavy casualties, with bloodstains found on the Ehime Mbano-Oriagwu road.

The Army has refuted claims of soldier fatalities.

It further reassured the public that no troops were lost in the engagement.

This incident is not isolated, as IPOB/ESN elements had previously attacked the Isiala Mbano Local Government Headquarters on October 3, 2023, destroying public buildings.

The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens and government infrastructure in Imo State.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities using the toll-free line 193 (Option 2).

Army assures residents of Imo State and the South East region that they can continue their daily activities without fear of intimidation.

The 82 Division emphasized that IPOB/ESN actions are driven by selfish motives, not in the interest of the people.

The Nigerian Army remains determined to defend the region and deal decisively with any criminal attempts to destabilize the government and peace in the region.
