President Bola Tinubu has approved the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration, an initiative aimed at addressing the critical challenges facing Nigeria’s health and human resources.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate who announced the approval on Monday emphasized the policy’s role as a comprehensive strategy to manage and reverse the ongoing exodus of healthcare professionals from the country.

Prof Pate described the policy as one that demonstrates the government’s commitment to transforming healthcare human resource management in Nigeria.

“This policy is more than just a response to the ongoing exodus of healthcare professionals; it envisions a thriving workforce that is well-supported, adequately rewarded, and optimally utilized to meet the healthcare needs of all Nigerians,” Pate said.

The issue of healthcare worker migration has become increasingly pronounced, with many professionals leaving for better opportunities abroad.

This trend has left their colleagues to manage additional workloads and extended hours, exacerbated by inadequate equipment, poor working conditions and a subpar salary structure.

The new policy aims to address these push factors, providing a framework for regular reviews of working conditions and ensuring that health workers, particularly in underserved areas, receive the recognition they deserve.

Key to the policy is the Nigeria Human Health Resource Programme, which promotes professional growth and stability within the healthcare sector.

The initiative prioritizes the integration of advanced health technologies, including Electronic Medical Records and telehealth systems, to create a more efficient and data-driven healthcare environment.

This technological focus also aims to enhance the equitable distribution of health workers and improve access to quality care for all Nigerians.

The policy also emphasizes the importance of capacity building through continuous professional development and strategic international training partnerships.

Prof Pate highlighted that investing in human capital is essential for retaining top healthcare talent in Nigeria.
