Nigeria @64: Evil Forces Threatening Nigeria, Heroes Past –Oborevwori

…as Police take over protesters’ gathering points

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has called on Nigerians to unite against forces of evil that are threatening the corporate existence of the country and its growth and development.

The governor’s admonition emerged on a day the planned hardship protest couldn’t hold as stern looking security men took over every flashpoints across the state to prevent gathering of any sort.

The popular Koka Junction, InterBau Roundabout and Abraka Stopover, which were their gathering points were empty of protesters but heavy police presence took strategic locations.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said: “They are there to prevent breakdown of law and order, and not to harm any law abiding citizens.”

The governor said Nigerians must unite and never allow the freedom the country gained from colonial masters over 64 years ago to be taken for granted by bad leaders.

However, Oborevwori, while speaking at the Independence Day parade at the Cenotaph in Asaba, yesterday, said the circumstances surrounding our birth and freedom as a nation, should make us to engage in sober reflection for renewed hope in project Nigeria.

He said although the time we are into is hard, we must not give up but believe that the future would be better. He said: “Don’t loose infinite hope in the Nigeria project. To loose hope is to cease to live. “We must stand resolute in contending with the forces of evil threatening to tear us apart through bigotry, inciting oratory, and insurgency.

“I am confident that Nigeria will come out of its current predicament stronger and better poised to live up to its potential and promise as the giant of Africa.”

He said his administration alone had worked hard to cushion the pains of the current hardship, occasioned by the fiscal and monetary reforms, pointing out that his administration upscaled the beneficiaries of Delta Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) programme from 36,353 to 208,209) persons, representing an astronomical increase of 473 per cent.

He hailed the ‘Renewed Hope’ pursuit of President Bola Tinubu and lauded him for constituting a National Youth Conference for the purpose of integrating youths into active nation building, assuring that the state would key into the initiative to invest in policies and programmes.

He said his administration will not spare any effort to ensure that crime is reduced to the barest minimum by strengthening partnership with the security agencies.
