Niger Boat Accident: 36 Corpses Recovered, Over 110 Still Missing

Thirty six bodies have so far been recovered following the boat accident which involved about 300 passengers at the River Niger upstream, Jebba Dam, in Gbajibo Community of Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

It would be recalled that the passengers who are all from Kwara State, including the Chief Imam of old Gbajiko village were returning home after the Maulud celebration to mark the birthday of Prophet Muhammed at Gbajibo.

New Telegraph had reported that the incident occurred on Tuesday, October 1, and out of the about 300 passengers, 150 were rescued alive.

According to an updated statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), “as at 6pm on Thursday, 3rd October, 2024, we have recovered 36 bodies and the search team is still looking out for others.”

He added that the Agency is working assiduously with the Ministry of Transport, National Inland Waterways and local divers to recovers others yet unaccounted for.
