5 ,776 athletes from 29 states of the federation gathered at the late Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State for the opening ceremony of the National Youth Games. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s presence at the venue was met with joy as he expressed the state’s readiness to host the 8th edition without any issues.
The governor, accompanied by Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Chief Solomon Ogba, and top officials of the State Sports Commission, inspected the various facilities such as the swim – ming pool and shooting range at the Indoor Sports Hall to ensure preparedness.
He said: “We are ready for hosting of the National Youth Games. You know, tomorrow (today) is the opening ceremony. At the moment, 29 states have arrived and 5,776 athletes have been registered already.
I am sure that this year will be better than last year.” He was thrilled that hosting the games would bring positive results for the state and Nigeria.
He cited the Olympics performance of Favour Ofili, a product of the games, in Paris. “So, this year’s games, we look for – ward to talented athletes that will be better than Ofili,” the governor assured.
