
The 48th anniversary of Nigeria’s National Theatre was marked with reflection and celebration, as theatre practitioners, arts enthusiast, gathered in Lagos recently.
The iconic monument, built during the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon in 1976 and completed under Olusegun Obasanjo in 1977, has stood as a beacon for the performing arts and cultural tourism for nearly five decades.
The event, sponsored by Jameson, took place at the Queen Amina Garden within the National Theatre complex in Iganmu, Lagos. Dignitaries at the event include the Artistic Director/ CEO of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Hajia Kaltume Bulama Gana fsna; President of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), Mr. Israel Eboh fta, and several others.
Themed “Rebranding Boundless Opportunities,” the anniversary event was a celebration of the theatre’s journey and a look toward its promising future.
The General Manager of the National Theatre, Mrs. Tola Akerele, in her speech, highlighted the contributions of the theatre’s pioneers. She paid tribute to past General Managers and CEOs whose leadership helped sustain the institution through tough times.
Mrs. Akerele also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government of Nigeria, particularly the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, for their commitment to preserving the theatre.
The Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers Committee were also praised for their instrumental role in the ongoing restoration of the National Theatre, which is now positioned to host worldclass performances and festivals.
“Today’s theme, ‘Rebranding Boundless Opportunities’, reflects a profound moment of renewal. This theatre is not just a building of steel and bricks, but the embodiment of the creative spirit of the Nigerian people,” Mrs. Akerele remarked.
“We are entering a new chapter filled with limitless potential for creativity, innovation, and cultural expression.” The event featured performances by the National Troupe, dazzling the audience with dances that showcased the richness and diversity of Nigeria’s culture.
Guest artist Abiola Time captivated attendees with a powerful rendition of the national anthem. In her goodwill message, Hajia Gana emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between the National Theatre and other agencies to achieve shared cultural goals.
