Mordi Energy Shares Journey, Inspirations, Upcoming Release

Nigerian Afrofusion artist Michael Chukwudozie Obiagwu, popularly known as Mordi Energy, has opened up about his musical journey, influences, and upcoming projects in an exclusive interview.

Hailing from Idemili-South in Anambra State, Mordi is a towering 6’5” presence on the stage, currently based in Lagos, and preparing to release a new single later this month.

In discussing how music found its way into his life, Mordi said, “I was born into music; it has always resonated soundly with my soul.”

Growing up in a household that appreciated a wide range of music genres, from 80s hip-hop to the soulful sounds of Celine Dion and Toni Braxton, Mordi revealed that his early exposure to artists like Michael Jackson fueled his desire to one day stand before thousands of fans.

His early years saw him immersed in choir performances and various musical groups, all while dreaming of making it big in the music industry. After releasing a few tracks in 2021, his official debut came in 2022 with the release of ‘Inner Sounds’.

Now, he’s gearing up for the launch of his latest single, “Onye Isi,” set to drop on October 24, 2024. “I’m currently working on video content for my forthcoming releases and planning my first headline show,” he shared.

Mordi describes his sound as “Afrofusion,” a blend of Nigerian rhythms with diverse global influences. “I like to make energetic, feel-good music as well as lyrically thought-provoking, calmer songs.

My net is cast very wide in a lake,” he explained, emphasizing the experimental nature of his music within the cultural confines of Afrobeats.

When asked what sets him apart from others in the industry, Mordi pointed to both his physical presence and his faith.

“First of all, I’m 6’5” tall there’s not many musicians at that height. But more than that, my music stands out and differentiates me from my colleagues. I will be number one eventually; it’s only a matter of time.”

As he continues to navigate the music world, Mordi stays true to his process, often collaborating closely with his producer DSOUNDZ.

“I usually have a direction that I relay to my producer… I let it connect with my soul and provoke a feeling,” he said, emphasizing the emotional foundation of his music.

For Mordi, music is not just a career but a lifestyle. He admits that balancing his personal life with his career can be challenging.

“To be honest, music has taken up most of my personal life… but to be honest, music is my life right now,” he confessed.

Looking to the future, Mordi dreams of collaborating with big names like Burna Boy and Eminem, while also planning a global album.

He remains grounded, though, in his message of love, empathy, and authenticity. “I want people to lead with love and realize that we’re all one,” he emphasized. “Staying true to yourself is important.”

Mordi Energy is undoubtedly one to watch, with his unique sound, powerful presence, and upcoming releases poised to make waves in the industry.

As for what’s next, Mordi simply says, “Stay connected. My next single, ‘Onye Isi,’ drops on October 24, 2024.”
