A security scare at Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport led to significant travel disruptions over the weekend after a pair of scissors went missing from a store near the boarding gates.
The incident caused the suspension of security checks for about two hours on Saturday morning, resulting in 36 flight cancellations and 201 delays.
Passengers faced extensive queues and were forced to retake security checks as authorities searched for the missing scissors, which were eventually found the following day.

The airport operator, Hokkaido Airport, confirmed the scissors’ recovery and assured travelers that the situation was handled as a potential security threat.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has instructed Hokkaido Airports to investigate the incident and improve storage and management systems.
