Harry Maguire on Sunday announced he has been stripped of the Manchester United captaincy.
Taking to his verified Twitter handle, the 30-year-old revealed that after discussions with Erik ten Hag, he was informed that the manager would be changing captain ahead of next season.
Maguire said: “He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.
“So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband.”

The England international was handed the armband just six months after his big-money move from Leicester by then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he made a note to thank the Norwegian saying he would “always be grateful” to him for “first giving him the responsibility”.
Maguire’s role at United has become greatly diminished since the arrival of Erik ten Hag last summer, with the Dutchman favouring Lisandro Martínez and Raphaël Varane at the back.
In his absence from the first-team, Bruno Fernandes took the captaincy and he is considered the most likely candidate to replace Maguire on a full-time basis.
His removal as captain will only add to speculation that the centre-back will depart the club this summer, with West Ham rumoured to be interested in signing him.
