
The Labour Party (LP) has appointed Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the Chairman of its Caretaker Committee.
The appointment was announced during a stakeholders meeting held on Wednesday in Umuahia, the State capital.
Usman, a former Minister of Finance and Senator representing Kaduna South senatorial district from 2011 to 2015 will lead the 29-member committee.
Senator Darlington Nwokocha from Abia Central, the immediate-past Senate Minority Deputy Leader, will serve as the Secretary of the committee.

The committee has been tasked with rescuing the party from its current leadership crisis and organizing a convention to elect new leadership from the Ward to the national stage.
The committee has 90 days to complete its assignment. The meeting was attended by top party officials, including the presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi; his running mate, Datti Ahmed; Senator Victor Umeh; and the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Rhodes-Vivour. The event was hosted by Governor Alex Otti.
This development is seen as a significant step towards resolving the leadership crisis in the Labour Party and repositioning the party for future elections.
With the appointment of Senator Usman and Senator Nwokocha, the party is expected to benefit from their wealth of experience and leadership skills.
