Liverpool’s Nunez Banned For Five Games

Liverpool forward, Darwin Nunez, has received a five-game ban for his involvement in an altercation with spectators following Uruguay’s defeat by Colombia in the Copa America semi-final.

Aside from the ban which will prevent him from engaging in five international matches starting from September this year, Darwin Nunez has been fined £15,145.

Alongside Nunez, four other players have also been punished for the same incident. Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a four-game ban, while Napoli defender Mathias Olivera, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, and Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez have received three-game bans each.

These actions were taken by South American football’s governing body Conmebol, after weeks of investigation into the altercation. The altercation occurred in an area of the stadium where many family members of the Uruguay players were seated.

After the incident, Gimenez said: “There was no police and we had to defend our families.

“This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don’t know how to drink.”

Note that Uruguay will be significantly affected by these bans as they prepare for their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches in September and October. Their next match is against Paraguay on 6th September in Montevideo.
