The Civil Society Organisation, Yiaga Africa, has called on Local Governments across Nigeria to adhere strictly to democratic principles to promote growth and development in communities.
The election observer made this call on Saturday in a statement issued by its Programme Officer, Olaniyan Sanusi, following a one-day workshop held in Lagos which focuses on the People’s Assembly tool for deliberative democracy.
Speaking at the workshop, Sanusi emphasized the need for platforms that amplify local voices, enabling citizens to deliberate on issues affecting their communities and engage Local Government officials effectively.

He highlighted the progress of the People’s Assembly initiative, which began in 2022 and now operates in six Local Governments.
He assessed the impact of the People’s Assembly, with participants discussing outcomes and the engagement of local governments in addressing community concerns.
Sanusi reiterated the importance of regular deliberations to ensure the government acts on agreed-upon resolutions based on available resources.
Kosofe Local Government Vice Chairman, Oluwole Sosanya, also spoke at the workshop, noting that it helps bridge communication gaps between the people and elected officials.
Sosanya added that face-to-face interactions will improve understanding of citizens’ needs and ensure responsive governance at the local level.
