LG Chairman Flags Off Hepatitis Awareness, Advocacy Campaign In Afikpo

The Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Engr Timothy Nwachi, has flagged-off the sensitization and awareness campaign on Hepatitis in the area.

In a similar vein, the Council boss who assumed office on September 1st 2024, swore-in 12 ward Councillors elected during the July 20th 2024 Local Government polls in the State.

Speaking during the flag-off held at the Council secretariat Afikpo, Nwachi said that the campaign was the initiative of the wife of the Governor, Mrs Maudline Nwifuru.

He said that the State First Lady sent the health officials to the area, and has taken care of the entire logistics.

“The aim of the awareness campaign is to make sure that every person affected by hepatitis B, is identified and taken care of”.

The Chairman enjoined the people to make themselves available for testing and counselling each time the health officials visit the wards.

In a lecture, the Leader of visiting Team Dr John Igboke, said that hepatitis was transmitted by hepatitis B virus .

“We are here to sensitize the people on hepatitis B virus, the mode of transmission is through blood transmission, sharing of sharps and unprotected sexual intercourse”

“Early detection, prompt diagnosis is one of the ways of preventing the menace’

Meanwhile, Engr Nwachi has charged the newly inaugurated Councilors to be good ambassadors of their constituents.

“You should concentrate on legislation that would fast-track development of the council, avoid frivolities for personal aggrandizement”

He commended them for the peaceful election of floor functionaries of the legislative council including Hon Joel Inya Agwu (Ezeke ward) who emerged as Leader of the House.

The Council boss said that he would construct a new office complex, that will be befitting of Afikpo as the second commercial city in the State.

“Afikpo Council needs modern structures with office accomodation, work will commence in no distant time”

He lauded Governor Francis Nwifuru, for his all inclusive leadership, that has brought sustainable peace and harmony in the State.

‘I promise to step down the People’s Charter of Needs Agenda of the state government at the council”

The event had in attendance stakeholders, traditional rulers including Ezeogo Ewa Elechi of Ohaisu community, the Chairman of Ebonyi State Founding Fathers Forum Chief Hyacinth Ikpor and a member of the State Scholarship Board Chief Ezeogo Ajah among others.
