LAWMA: I never defrauded Lagos govt –Williams

One of the contractors of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mrs. Wuraola Williams, has denied the allegations of fraud levelled against her.

Williams, popularly called Iron Lady, disclosed this yesterday while addressing journalists in her office on Lagos-Island.

She said the management of LAWMA was only calling a dog a bad name in ordere to hang it.

Williams added that there was no time money meant for the sweepers’ salaries was squandered.
The contractor said she was ill and hospitalised which explained the delay in the payment of sweepers’salaries.

She said: “Some of the sweepers who went to the street to protest did it out of impatience because there was no way i could pay them salary while on sick bed in the hospital.

“While at the hospital some of the sweepers came to greet me, but those who decided to protest did it on their own. Immediately I heard about the protest, I left the hospital to facilitate their payment.

“The sweepers, who are mostly widows and unemployed youths, were empowered by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to engage them and take the youth away from the street. Also on the allegation that I am controlling 66 routes, it was the same LAWMA management that took 23 away from us, leaving us with 43, even with the remaining routes, some leaders of All Progressives Congress (APC) have some.

“Whoever said I swindled the state government through street sweepers should come up with a proof. I have the record of all the sweepers under me, I want the auditors to proceed on their work for verification purposes. I will also appreciate the auditors visit the sweepers beat during their working hours to confirm if actually they are ghost workers.

“The auditors’ report was done to implicate me and to paint her black in the public. I believe prosterity we judge whatever people do. I believe I would be vindicated.”
